Volunteering to help the Canterbury community manage

Swine Flu

Thank you for thinking about becoming a volunteer to help our community manage this Swine Influenza A (H1N1) pandemic. Once you have read this information if you would like to volunteer click here.

Most people with this flu will be able to manage at home if they rest, have plenty of fluids, take paracetamol (for a fever) and have people to support them. People who don’t have friends and family to help them, may find it difficult to cope. Volunteers can help fill this gap and free up health professionals to provide essential services.

Past pandemics have shown communities that are organised and prepared came through in the best shape. Volunteers are an important part of this and can help in many ways, ranging from administration jobs to delivering meals and medicines and providing care in the home.

While this pandemic is not as severe as it might have been, Influenza A (H1N1) could affect one third of the Canterbury population over the next few months. In the peak week 40,000 – 60,000 people may be ill with Swine Flu, with 6,000 – 8,000 needing some form of assistance at home. The existing health and welfare systems may not be able to respond to this level of demand. Volunteers will make a big difference.

People with influenza generally feel very unwell with fever, headache, sore throat, cough, aching muscles and extreme tiredness for about a week. If you need medical help or community support yourself, please call the Canterbury Flu line on 0800 37 30 37.
